It's not often you get a personally signed letter from a Presidential candidate. It all started with light conversations filling the cafe as the group of about 120 voters waited for Mike Pence to arrive. My husband and I sat on stools enjoying donuts and surveying the room. We watched as journalists joined the other media outlets already crowded on the back wall. I found it amusing as they politely tried to wriggle themselves in with their tripods and cameras in whatever space they could squeeze into.
Moments later Mike Pence and his wife arrived. I watched him through the cafe windows as he wound his way through clusters of Iowans standing or sitting in the mall area outside the eatery. When he entered the cafe he was met with applause.
In the next 30 to 40 minutes Mike Pence spoke about the challenges facing America and mentioned some solutions. As I listened to him speak, two characteristics about him began to stand out to me. First and foremost, I saw a man who possessed inner strength; the kind of inner strength you need on the hard days.
Secondly, I saw how personable he was. At the end of his speech, he said he wanted to shake everyone's hand before he left. And he did.
That's how we met him and his wife. We spoke candidly about raising kids and thanked him for coming.
But what surprised us most was the
personalized, signed letter that my husband received from Mike Pence a few weeks later. Someone found
the article my husband wrote about the former vice-president, prompting Mike Pence to send a signed letter thanking him for the kind words.
Mike Pence didn't have to take the time to say thank you. We would have never known that he knew about the article. Yet, he did it anyway.
If you get a chance to meet Mike Pence in person, go.
