Why do some campaigns and their Super PACs send out mail and some do not?
This is the question that I started thinking about after we received a new postcard from Tim Scott's Super PAC, Opportunity Matters Fund, Inc. It had been a while since we received a mailing supporting his campaign, but there are several campaigns from which we have never received a mailing.
Why?
The most obvious is probably money. Printing and mailing things isn't cheap, especially for something that goes straight to the trash can 99% of the time. And other than the Perry Johnson campaign and perhaps one of the first mailings from Doug Burgum, most of these come from Super PACs. The campaigns aren't usually going to spend time and money on finding designers or agencies to design these and then get just the right mailing lists and pay for postage. There are so many better ways to spend their money.
But they must have some impact or else no one would be doing them.
Which of the "major" campaigns and/or their Super PACs (still in the race) have we not received mailings from yet?
Mike Pence
Vivek Ramaswamy
Asa Hutchinson
Ryan Binkley
Will Hurd
Chris Christie
Larry Elder
Corey Stapleton
Joe Biden
Robert F. Kennedy
Marianne Williamson
The second major reason why we have not received mailings from these candidates is because we just aren't on someone's list. Mail can be very targeted or just pushed out to everyone. But if a campaign is trying to save money on print and postage costs, they may spend money on research and list targeting instead. If a person is deemed by computer algorithms to not be a potential voter for a particular candidate why waste money on sending them mail. The most obvious example of this is why we have never received any mail from the Democrat Party candidates, that is assuming they are sending mail to their own party voters. There aren't a lot of Democrats in this area of Iowa. In the five Presidential election cycles we have lived here, I think there has been maybe one Democrat candidate stop by this area.
With all that said, I think there is one additional reason why mail is not being sent out by some campaigns.
They are not serious about their campaign.
They are either completely fooling themselves that they have a chance to win or they are in this race for ulterior motives. What would those ulterior motives be? Whatever they are, they cannot be good. Be careful of these candidates!
